Christmas Challenge - Subway Restaurant

I have been really good, and have avoided spending a lot of money lately, so the Christmas challenge posts have been few and far between.

Today I had lunch at Subway which happens at least every couple of weeks, and usually more often.

Anyone who has read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser has heard that Subway functions on a kill or be killed franchise model where owners are encouraged to cut corners and saturate an area with as many restaurants as possible.

Focusing on growth above quality has caused Subway restauarants to become ubiquitous at the same time allowing comptitors such as Quizno's to encroach on their market share and become the number 2 sandwich shop in the US by offering higher quality sandwiches.

The nature of Fast Food leads to numerous problems for people that eat there, work there, and live on the same planet.

Schlosser's book goes from factory to mouth following the industry and is a very enlightening look. A fictional movie based on his book comes out soon and looks really good.

Gift Cards

I was given a Christmas Gift Card for Subway Restaurants. When I attempted to redeem it, it was not honored. It seems that while Subway can issue gift cards, and is naturally quite happy to do so, it cannot make the franchises accept it. This is a very poor business practice and I see Subway going the way of A & W Root Beer because it is more interested in selling franchises than serving customers.
