Babel

The Confusion of Tongues by Gustave Dor
So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
Genesis 11: 8-9

The movie Babel follows the story of several groups of people that are spread out across the world.

There is an american couple visiting Morocco, their children accompanying their nanny on a trip to Mexico, two young Moroccan boys, and a Japanese father and daughter.

The movie illustrates how the lives of these people spread out across the world can be interconnected.

Throughout the movie, problems arise, and are magnified from people's failure to be able to communicate and understand each other.

The quote from Genesis illustrates why Guillermo Arriaga chose Babel for the title of his movie.

Babel, both the Biblical story, and the movie can serve as a warning to those of us living in the modern world. Due to globalization we are becoming interconnected to a greater extent than ever in the history of the world. We need to strive to understand those around us to avoid another scattering.
