Corporate Social Responsibility

green boardroomThe latest buzzword to hit the business world is Corporate Social Responsibility. CSR basically means corporations doing more than they have to to help their employees and their customers lead better lives.

At first glance it seems that CSR is a movement in the right direction for multinationals. In reality CSR is a method for corporations to appear to be doing good while continue to pursue their own best interests. Some corporations will do what is best for the world at the expense of their own profits. Others spend millions to improve their image while not making any real sacrifices to improve the sustainability of their product.

The sad reality is that corporations are slaves to their shareholders. Shareholders do not want to lose their money because a corporation wants to "play nice."

To create real change we can't rely on corporations. We need to create legal restrictions on bad corporate behavior.

Better than nothing!

I think that it's better for the corporations to at least be doing something rather than nothing at all - there's plenty of them out there that don't do a thing, or they give very, very tightly. One movement that is well under way is for shareholders to start making more demands on the corporation to do "good." Another is for places with big money, like foundations, to make sure their investments are socially responsible. There is a big movement in this direction. Yet there is a also a strong argument against from some like the Gates Foundation. Something's better than nothing right? Check out my blog at www.appropriatedevelopment.com
