Life at the intersection of technology and nature

Open Spectrum?

So what the heck is Open Spectrum anyway?

Well as many of you probably know wireless signals are divided up into different spectrums, one for your cell phone, one for your wireless home phone, and one for your wifi signal.

Historically the FCC has auctioned off individual pieces of the spectrum, usually to the highest bidder. Open Spectrum is a movement to have a freely usable spectrum available for anyway who wants to use it.

So why should you care?

How does free wireless broadband that is 10 times as fast as what you can pay for sound? There is virtually no limit to what can be done with this spectrum with new technologies that improve the coverage area of wifi.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that existing internet providers aren't too excited about freely available high speed internet for the masses. Write to your Senator or Congressman and tell them to give back the airwaves to the people.
