The Hundred Thousand Dollar House

100k House

One problem with the current post Inconvenient Truth environmental movement is that is has been largely the domain of the rich. This problem becomes even more pronounced when it comes to environmentally conscious building.

Because many of the techniques used require expensive materials, celebrities are usually the first ones to have solar panels on their roof, and use sustainable materials for construction. One group in Philadelphia is trying to change that with their 100 Thousand Dollar House.

Rather than build a 10,000 square foot mansion, they are going to build a two bedroom 1.5 bath house at a comfortable 1000 square feet. The real value from this project, is not only in the houses built, but in the documentation of the process they have used to implement green techniques with as little expense as possible.

Scrounging for materials to make compost bins in Jamaica first opened my eyes to the ability to create low-cost environmental solutions, but I never thought I could build a house using the same mindset. It should be interesting to watch how their project turns out.
