Open Spectrum?
Sat, 07/21/2007 - 13:04 — the geekSo what the heck is Open Spectrum anyway?
Well as many of you probably know wireless signals are divided up into different spectrums, one for your cell phone, one for your wireless home phone, and one for your wifi signal.
Historically the FCC has auctioned off individual pieces of the spectrum, usually to the highest bidder. Open Spectrum is a movement to have a freely usable spectrum available for anyway who wants to use it.
So why should you care?
Does Google Care About Privacy?
Fri, 06/15/2007 - 10:27 — the geekThe short answer, no.
Google's main source of revenue is your personal information. From search to mail to analytics, Google is able to offer these "free" services because of the valuable information they provide. Think the analytics results for your own site are interesting, imagine what Google's statistics about all of these websites must look like combined.

High Fructose Corn Syrup Update
Sat, 05/12/2007 - 12:42 — the geekThe scientific jury may still be out, but I have made up my mind.
After writing my last post about high fructose corn syrup I have tried my hardest to completely remove this substance from my diet. This has proven very difficult, but I think I have accomplished a very significant reduction by avoiding processed sweets, and buying natural and organic foods when I possible.
Global Voices
Mon, 04/23/2007 - 18:22 — the geek
I just returned from hearing Ethan Zuckerman speak about his project Global Voices.
Global Voices was founded to close a long-existing gap where wealthier countries are dispraportionatly covered in the global media compared to their less-wealthy counterparts.
Global Voices is a place to find the work of bloggers from almost every corner of the world. I know from personal experience that finding news about foreign countries in the United States is often difficult if not impossible. I studied Haitian Kreyol while at University, and was e-mailed every time the New York Times published an article about Haiti. I got an e-mail about once every 3 months, unless there was a coup, or a major leader was assasinated. It is hard for me to understand why a country that has almost completely fallen apart, several hundred miles away from Florida, is not important enough for coverage by the New York Times.
Why I Don't Listen to the Radio
Sun, 04/15/2007 - 08:39 — the geekThe majority of people reading this probably know what a podcast is, but what does this combination of RSS and audio files mean for the future?
Currently I listen to about 1 hour of radio a week. This is the amount of time I am in my wife's car that has no stereo mini jack. Do I sit in silence on my daily hour commute. Not a chance.
Couch Surfing
Mon, 04/09/2007 - 18:27 — the geekA recent issue of Good Magazine introduced me to couchsurfing.com
The mission of CouchSurfing.com is to "Participate in Creating a Better World, One Couch at a Time". But what exactly does this mean?
Where Have All The Colors Gone?
Thu, 04/05/2007 - 06:36 — the geekHappy Naked Day!
Today is CSS Naked Day the only day in the year when websites can let all of their inhibitions go and show the underlying structure that is beneath their pretty styles.
For those of you who don't know CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets, these style sheets take plain old HTML, that you may remember from 1994, and turn it into something a lot better looking. However, if you turn them off, the site should still be usable.
Let me know if this site accomplishes that feat, or falls on its face.
Stones - Jamaican Wisdom
Sat, 03/31/2007 - 10:35 — the geek
Stone a riva bottom nuh know sun hot
This nugget of Jamaican wisdom comes from a much earlier time than the previous post.
Every culture and every language has a collection of proverbs that illustrate some of the collective wisdom that has been passed down for years.
This particular statement sadly illustrates the steep divides that have always existed in Jamaican culture.
Urination Meditation
Sun, 03/11/2007 - 20:27 — the geekMany people in the workplace would say they don't have time to take out of their busy schedule to clear their heads and focus on their breath. Little do they know that a golden opportunity comes up quite often at the workplace. There are four steps to a more conscious workday.
Step 1. Drink a lot of water, you have to drink a whole lot for it to become unhealthy, so don't worry about too much!
Step 2. Visit the nearest bathroom.
